To date, over $200,000 in cash and prizes has been awarded to the winners of World Beer Pong Tour tournaments. The WBPT has been hosting beer pong tourneys for over 3 years, across the northeastern US. They started with just one goal in mind, to legitimize the sport of beer pong and host professional tournaments with a standard set of rules.

If all that wasn’t impressive enough, they’ve decided to crank it up a notch, and on host a $25,000 beer pong tournament this June dubbed “The Atlantic City Beer Pong Championship” at the Resorts Hotel and Casino, in the city that Donny Trump built Atlantic City, NJ.

We had a chance to sit down with Sam Pines, a.k.a. the Commissioner and ask him a few questions. Here’s how it went…

BPN - What is the inspiration for hosting a $25k beer pong tournament?

Sam - I always knew that hosting a big national tournament could have huge success and we just waited to wait until the right time to host one. We feel like hosting this tournament now is great, beer pong is getting big and for throwing a ball in a cup you can win 25K in Recession, so we expect a lot of people to be there.

BPN - Why Atlantic City?

Sam - Atlantic City is the perfect location for a big tournament due to the fact that the best beer pong players reside here in New York and the east coast. Also, it’s a close enough drive where people from Phily, and down the east coast can make the drive.

BPN - What beer will be on tap?

Sam - We are still unsure of this, we are working on securing a beer sponsor for the event.

BPN - How many teams do you expect will participate?

Sam - As of now, we have about 150 teams confirmed to play thru our signups and qualifiers. We are expecting that number to be around 400 or so by the time the tournament hits.

BPN - How much is the entry fee and what is included with it?

Sam - There are 2 packages to play in the tournament, one is the tournament only package and that is $200/player. The hotel + tournament package is $375/player and includes the tournament entry and a 3 night hotel stay at Resorts Casino and Hotel. Both entries give the players beer to play with for the tournament, although drinking beer is not required or encouraged.

BPN - If you could only use 3 words to explain this tournament, what would they be?

Sam - Beer Pong’s Wrestlemania

BPN - Beer Pong or Beirut?

Sam - We call it beer pong because that’s we were taught the game was called when we first started playing it. Sounds better than Beirut too.

BPN - Are there prizes for 2nd, 3rd, etc..?

Sam - Yes there will be cash prizes for the top 8 teams in the tournament TBA. It all depends on how many teams show up but the 25K is guaranteed for first.

BPN - What are you’re plans for The World Pong Tour long term?

Sam - We plan on making beer pong an official sport just like any other game that people play. If people can hit a golf ball in a cup and make millions, who says they can’t throw a ping pong ball in a cup and do the same. We plan on hosting several major tournaments a year in casinos and venues around the country.
